- Transcript: Galveston Saturday July 23rd/69 My darling Son I am again in Galveston with Mrs Harrison, She is now able to be up most of the time tho quite feeble, I met your letter at Hog Island, was glad to hear from you, and to get the money $6.00 I had already borrowed six dollars from Mrs Roberts lest I might not get any from you. The morning I went home at Mrs Robert wharf I took our my Pocket Book to pay Mr Grafton, and that is the last I have seen of it. I only had four dollars in it, & your last letter pencil and an envelope, I still hope to get it if not the money and other articles. The Pocket Book I prize above all else as it was your fathers and a gift from Mrs Long in March/33. I think Mrs Harrison will pay all my expenses as I want And returned [home] on her amount - I was surprised at your meeting with Mr Bollingers step daughter where you did and still more at her & Henries engagement This is a world of wonders is it not? Mrs Harrison is to make Mr Underwood a deed to a League of land in payment for what she is owing him and leave it with General Warel to be handed to Mr N --------------------------------------------------------------- and when Gen W delivers the deed Mr N is to give her a receipt in full of all demands, and then she will be out of their hands. You need not send me any Barrels I will try to get along without them, or get one myself by Mr. Tabbs Boat. I only intend to make that large Barrel of Sams full for our own use. as to whether it can wait for the Sugar I do not know, nor do I know whe- ther it requires the best sugar. All these things I will assertain of Mrs Roberts and let you know next week some time Mr English has called to see Mrs H & given her a small amount of money But as yet she has taken nothing in the way of security, not even a note he talks very fair and all that, so [make] it be - Pitt Allen is here, I will try to see him today but do not expect anything of him at present his Mother is north. I understand the true owner to the Barnun & Allen establishment has come on & Barnun has been put out of the concern and Fred is installed now as a clerk he told me himself, that he came near losing the little he had put in with Barnun I hope when I get home to be able to stay there in some quiet. Last evening Betsey came to see me again and says she will certainly go up with me, Sunday and that she may stay a long ------------------------------------------------------------- time, Mrs Roberts wants Mrs. McCue & her Boys to come back and live with her, so Mrs. Elum told me, don’t know what Mrs. McCue will think of the offer - Sunday we leave for home at 3 Oclock today, Betsey and girl goes up with us to my I only give $8.00 in currency, her child is large en- ough to do a great many things but I only keep her for what she can do, she can wait on Mrs Harrison I am so sorry to be obliged to call on you to your last cent, but hope the day will come when I can reimburse you ten fold, I am still trying to con- vert some of our land into money, I may come out again as I did with Kern, & again I have sent on to Gonzales Co. an other [re__u-] tion to be placed upon record with the money one dollar to pay for recording Mrs. Elum is opp- -osed to Mrs. McCue going to the Houston place as Jack will not be able to go with them until after the crop is gathered. As I have some one to do all my work I will ship them to some port, out of my way as Eddy told Mr. Bell that he was not getting any= thing for what he does. Bell told him he would not board him for what he was doing here for me, he gets less amount every day ------------------------------------------------------------------ I will not have much leisure time until after peach dry-ing time soaking pickles and wine. I have cut out of the News an article upon wine making which will be of service to me. The Bell seems to know all about it he will give up a press & & I have seen Miss Jennie she is not decided about returning to the “Home” I think she does not know what she is going to do - I can but pity her after all. Dr. and Mrs Stone wish to be remembered to you. Mrs Harrison sends much love - I hope to have a visit from you soon the Peaches will be fine by the time I get home - Do write me by every op- portunity - As ever your loving Mother Mary Jones No Yellow fever here yet, and but one Case reported in New Orleans
