But for a few lines Sam sent me by Miss Howland who came up last Monday to get Mrs H’s things I would not have known anything about his mov- ments, and even then he did not tell me upon what day he would be up, as it seems he was unable to fix upon a day until he heard from you, or you went down. I am ver[y] glad you was able to go down at that time. Jennie seems like a different person, she seems so happy to have some one to love, & be loved by _ she ------------------------------------------ told me that you kissed her when you took leave at the Island but “you did not call her sister once” So when you write make ample amends in this line. I think we will all like her, and no one will appreciate the acquisition more than I will. And on my part nothing in my power shall be lacking to make her feel at home, she is now the wife of one of my dear children, and of course will she be dear to me also. Mrs Harrison is getting everything moved away Mr. Tabb will take down an other lot of her things tomorrow & so on until everything will be gone which will be a relief to me I assure you, for several reasons ----------------------------------------- Sam told me you did not go to see her, while down I regret this very much as she will most likely not forgive you She wrote me by Miss H that she would take that hundred Acres of land in Matagorda Co. for which her & I own together for what I owed her if I was willing - of course I was willing and glad of the offer & so wrote her that I would make the deed at the earliest moment possible Oh how relieved I felt, you cannot imagine. I think she has gone over lock, stock & Barrel, to that old Iron Clad fraud, Carpet Bager Miss H so make it be, I say Well I have been in a state of termoil for just two weeks with packing up & getting off Mrs H’s things Betsey being -------------------------------------- sick in the midst of it, getting the house to rights after the clearing out &c &c &c Betsey gave Birth to a dead infant last Wednsday week - is doing will tho not yet able to aid me any, Luckily for me two days before this occurred William Burch came to me, and in very poor health, but able to milk, make fires, and do many things which is a relief to me in my predicament. I have been fitting up up the parlor & a bed room for Jennie, and altho I have but little to do with, I have suc ceded in making the old sha nty look quite nice, with the addition of half doz chairs it would be quite comfortable Mrs Ashes sofa is gone and in its stead Jenne & I intend to varnish up the the little lounge B[ ] make a hay mattress ---------------------------------------- For it the coming week, and cover it with one of the Blue Damask Curtains, make a New table cover out of the other one, & the Piano is alrea =dy covered with one, and with white window Curtains, we think it will be quite a nice parlor for poor country folks Today we killed a beef while Sam was here to aid us - I hope Sam will get us something in the way of supplies but he will att- end to this matter.
